MCLAREN - Wavetrac LSD (7-speed SSG)

Wavetrac is the only gear-type limited slip differential on the market that still does its job even when one axle becomes unloaded.

 

Axle unloading happens far more often than most drivers realize - during aggressive driving, track cornering, curb strikes, elevation changes, or on extremely slick surfaces. When it happens, traditional gear-type differentials simply stop working. We won’t get into torque bias ratio explanation here, just what matters is what happens on the road and on track.

 

What's the drawback of the conventional gear driven LSDs?

 

With a conventional gear-type LSD (OEM, Quaife, Torsen, Truetrac, etc.), torque biasing requires load on both axles. Picture a typical track scenario - you’re cornering hard, your inside wheel touches the curbing and the wheel briefly becomes unloaded. LSD unlocks and act as open diff and once the inside wheel comes back in touch with surface again it locks abruptly, causing handling instability and potential of damaging the LSD, gearbox or axles.

 

How does Wavetrac tackle this challenges?

 

Wavetrac features patented wave cam mechanism that eliminates this problem entirely. When one axle becomes unloaded, the internal cam device creates load inside the differential, instantly replacing the lost resistance. That load can then be biased to the wheel with grip, maintaining continuous drive exactly when other gear diffs fail.

 

Why not just choose the clutch-pack type LSD instead then?

 

While clutch-pack type LSD is still the preferred race cars type of LSD to go for, especially because of its predictability and linear operation, this type has quite a few drawbacks, especially on road driven cars. Main would be the wear rate of clutches requiring regular rebuilds to maintain flawless operation and the potential NVH increase due to constant locking / unlocking.

 

Wavetrac has similar performance to the conventional clutch-pack LSD, yet it's gear driven so it requires no regular maintenance or clutch replacement. No clutches, no chatter means smooth, silent operation with no push understeer or binding associated with clutch-type LSDs. Wavetrac LSD is perfectly suited for road cars and track cars. It is exceptionally strong, yet smooth during normal driving and fully compatible with factory traction control systems.
